Springbrook Community Notices

Springbrook BioBlitz is finishing up today at Koonjewarre.  Pop up to the base camp and check out the information stalls and activities even if you're not involved in the surveys.

The weather looks a little unpredictable over the next few days. Make sure you have the numbers for trees on the road and the link to the Mudgeeraba creek heights as this heat is likey to trigger a big storm soon.

Don't forget we have live Christmas trees here on the mountain specifically grown by a farmer for this purpose! They are $10 each and the proceeds go to the school. Call 0427146867 to order yours.

Thinking about Christmas? Want to buy local? We have lots of gift ideas right here on the mountain. Check out our cafes and road side stalls for lots of local products such as Youngs Rasberry Vinegar, Greenwood Farms Chutneys and Jams, Springbrook Honey, local macadamia nuts, locally grown kiwi fruit jam, teas, herbal teas, hand made candles, clothes, books, accessories, local art, plants, cards, kids toys, jewellery, fourty flavors of fudge, gemstones (The Gem Shop is an Aladdin's cave of shiny things). You could also ask for coffee n cake vouchers and accommodation vouchers from our local businesses.  Bet they would be happy to oblige. Make up a hamper of local produce. It's easy to do!

Letterbox Christmas decorating is getting underway. Heard the kiwi flag mum borrowed a power saw the other day. Can't wait to see what shes making this time!

Phone numbers for your phone:
Emergency: 000 or 112 from a mobile
Wildcare for injured animals 55272444
Roadkill deaths for statistic 0418454732

Hoonwatch 1800333000
Storm damage to your house SES 132500
Crime Stoppers: 1800333000

As we move into the school holidays, the influx of visitors to the mountain all day every day means we need to slow down a bit and keep an eye out for people who dont know our roads as well as we do. They often dont have phone signal and stop in the middle of what looks like a quiet country road to figure out where they are but in reality is our main road... Weve said it before, please slow down. The whole mountain is actually a 60km per hour zone.

We are looking for a Santa Suit for a Christmas party next weekend. If you have one, or know where we might be able to borrow one from, can you email the secretary on secretary@smca.org.au

Get involved. Have fun. Stay safe.

There will he lots of cars on the roads up here over Christmas so start getting your "Its Christmas time on the mountain" attitude on and just know everything will take bit longer to get everywhere over the holidays.

Our informal groups still plan to operate over the holidays mostly, most of the time. Check with each group and know what their plans are and when the formal groups break for 2020 and reconvene in 2021.

Christmas letterbox decorating is definitely happening! Make them Merv friendly and break out the baubles. Have fun being festive this year. It's been a long one! S

Springbrook Voices should start their deliveries any time now. The volunteers got their piles yesterday and should deliver them over the next few days. Be patient. It's another 40 page bumper issue with so much local content. We really have some amazing contributors here on the mountain as you'll see when your copy arrives!

Feel free to contribute to our community pages, notices and daily reminders anytime by emailing the details of your function, event, workshop or community info to secretary @smca.com.au and well let Springbrook know what's happening!

Remember theres a bike race down near the Dam entrance 8am to 1pm today. Looks like Latimers Crossing Rd is shut and parts of Gilston and Nerang-Murwillumbah Roads will be under Police stop/go. The website says 15 minute delays if you're heading that way.

The Springbrook Remembrance Day Service to celebrate Armistice Day will be on Wednesday, November 11th, starting at 10.45am. All locals are welcome to attend. Morning tea afterwards at the Fire Shed.

It would be lovely to see poppies up on Letterboxes on Wednesday to mark Remembrance Day, the Armistice and the end of World War One. A simple way to show your support and thanks for the folk who have kept Australia safe.

The SMCA will attempt to hold the quickest AGM ever in the hall on Wednesday night. Each year, we carefully sort out our meeting dates so we don't clash with the State of Origin, but 2020 defeated us. We need 15 people to show up. We'll start at 7pm and promise to let you go at 8pm, if not before. Just formalities. No frills. No frivolity. See you there!

Have you seen Cane Toads on the mountain this year??? WaterGum ate selling traps and bait to catch these menaces and both are available from WaterGums offices at Parklands Country Paradise in Nerang. Check their website for lots of information about cane toads and what you can do about them!

Check out the social media accounts for our local business and groups. Theres a great buy, sell and swap one in facebook, great stuff coming from the explorespringbrook instagram account and lots of our cafes and shops operate accounts letting us know what is happening in their world. Stay in the loop and like these accounts and support our local business!

Springbrook School is now collecting plastic bottle tops and toothbrushes to be recycled into new and exciting things. Collected them up (give them a bit of a rinse) and drop them off at the school gate on Friday mornings between 8.30am and 9am. It would be great if the cafes could set aside a bucket to collect them as well and help divert landfill back into a useful life!

Theres another one day silent yoga retreat at the hall this Saturday. 10am to 3pm and it's the perfect way to disconnect from the world and reconnect with yourself! Lots of info and bookings at www.karaswift.com.au.

Springbrook Voices Committee meeting, 11am on Saturday November 24th. Location to be confirmed.

Springbrook School P&C Election Day BBQ and Bake Sale, at the school yesterday was a wonderful success! Thanks to all you Springbrookians who turned up, bought bacon and egg rolls, sausages on bread and wiped out the home baked goodies! The P&C is thrilled with the amount they made and love the people who had had breakfast, were on a diet or on their way out but made a cash donation anyway. The way Springbrook supports it's own is great to see. Feel free to drop a donation direct to the school if you missed out yesterday!

The Springbrook Community Library will be on this Wednesday, 10am to 2pm in the hall. Natalie is happy to read stories to any kids who come along at any time. We've had lots of donations recently (Thanks Eva) so theres some new books for you to browse!

Who saw the under ground tanks go in to the new amenities block this week? Amazing stuff! Can wait to see what happens next. We'll check with Blake, the site foreman and see if we can get a date and time for the next round of things to watch out for!

Who enjoyed the decorated letterboxes this week? Lots of fun and some very creative people live up here. Letterbox decorating is a low key way to connect with the whole community. Melbourne Cup next week, what chippy, horsey ideas do you have?  Remembrance Day is coming up on November 11th. It would be nice to see the poppies out on letterboxes again for that one!

The first Tuesday of the month is the day to join up with the SES. They meet in the SES shed every Tuesday for training at 7pm. Mostly hands on but with all the normal paperwork stuff in the first few weeks, the training nights involve dummy, ropes, stretchers and cups of tea. Come along and check them out this Thursday. Only another month or so of training before they break for the Christmas Holidays so this is a good week to get involved!

Remembrance Day is not far away. Wednesday, November 11th at 11am. Remember Armistice Day by attending a small ceremony at the Cenotaph if you can.

Melbourne Cup next week, Tuesday November 3rd. Any events planned? Any Cafes doing a Melbourne Cup lunch for locals? Let us know!

*Have you seen Cane Toads on the mountain this year??? WaterGum ate selling traps and bait to catch these menaces and both are available from WaterGums offices at Parklands Country Paradise in Nerang. Check their website for lots of information about cane toads and what you can do about them!

*Check out the social media accounts for our local business and groups. Theres a great buy, sell and swap one in facebook, great stuff coming from the explorespringbrook instagram account and lots of our cafes and shops operate accounts letting us know what is happening in their world. Stay in the loop and like these accounts and support our local business!

*Found a hurt or injured animal on the road? Call Wildcare on 55272444 and they will get onto a carer on the mountain for you. To report dead wildlife for our statistics, please text 0418454732 with the location/address, day, date and type of animal. Don't forget to check to check the pouch if it's a female marsupial.

*Dont forget to make Springbrook Voices your first stop when you need a tradie on the mountain. Theres lots of great people who are very good at what they do, right here on our doorstep. Call the first and shop local when you can!

*Theres lots of road side stalls popping up over the place at the moment. A lovely way to spend the weekend mornings is to drive around with some cash visiting the stall to see what local goodies are on offer. From Echo Valley at the beginning of Lyrebird Ridge Road to Greenwood Farm right up at Goomalarah,  there is often six other stalls open as well. See if you can find them all and enjoy our local goodies.

So, so good to see some waterfall recharging rain!! A good reminder to make sure you are storm ready and have fresh batteries in your torches! Storms and tons of rain often lead to loss of power up here so make sure you are on the disaster managements text list and that you "like" them on facebook to get up to date, real time local info about any kind of disaster we maybe experiancing.

If you see any trees down across the roads, please call the TMR emergency line 131940 for Springbrook Road and the City of Gold Coast emergency line 1800637000 for the smaller Roads. They will send someone up fairly quickly to deal with it. Technically,  our local guys cant deal with trees on the road until directed to by decorative epaulette wearing persons!

Check out the Notice board at the Springbrook Emporium (the tip) for local services and tradies. A great place to find out what's on, what's happening and who's selling what. Put your own notice up. It's a fantastic community resource!

Stay safe. Get out and about. Enjoy your community!

The Springbrook Mens Shed has reopened with standard Covidsafe rules. They operate Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 9amish to 1pmish with morning tea 10.30ish. They open and close on mountain time! If you're a bloke on the mountain and you havent dropped in to see the biggest shed in this small village, then make a date to do that this week and see what all the fuss is about. You'll be most welcome!

Please, please please, slow down in front of the school. Its starting to get quite dangerous outside the school during drop off and pick up times, and is concerning all those there at the time. It's most likely to be locals at that time of the day too. Please, slow down. Its a hard enough road to cross with out a bag, or am and a 5 year old in tow...

Food Scrap Friday is a community composting initiative run by the school and its P&C. Just bring your bucket of vege food scraps to the gate between 8am and 8.30am and the gardening project kids will weigh it, empty it into their compost heap and rinse the bucket before returning it to you at the gate. A great way to be involved even if you dont have kids at the school.

Have you seen the new environmental  initiative that's being started by members of our mountain community? Sarah and Keiran have created Climb a Tree Foundation to help spread all sorts of environmental and sustainable  ideas and projects around. You can join as foundation members or support the go fund me page to make and install wildlife nesting boxes in fire affected areas. Have a look on the My Springbrook webpage under Climb a Tree Foundation for more details. www.lovespringbrook.blogspot.com

The Springbrook Visitor Infomation Center is reopening again this weekend. Peter will he there on Sunday to greet and help out our visitors from 11amish to 2pmish, mountain time. The Centre is always looking for volunteers. Call Annette on 0427 415 299 to volunteer.  Its heaps of fun!

Our local emergency crews have had a lot of call outs recently so give them a heartfelt, corona safe, elbow bump next time you see one. There's been quite a few accidents on the roads (please, slow down) and they get to attend most of them. Thanks for getting out of bed, having your dinners interrupted and leaving your family's special times to help us out. Its appreciated.

Nerang-Murwillumbah road upgrade ideas, suggestions and recommendations can be sent to your state representative, Ros Bates on mudgeeraba@parliament.qld.gov.au or direct to TMR via their web page. Send maps with the dangerous corners clearly marked, areas for overtaking bays and other road issues to them sooner rather than later so they can be considered before the final plan is unveiled.

Springbrook P&C have started all their extra curricular activities again.
*Wednesday, gardening day 8.30am
*Thursday, Yoga 8.15pm
*Friday, Food scrap Friday Community Composting 8.30am.
*Friday, Bottle top and toothbrush recycling. Drop to the front gate 8.30 to 9am.

Tuck shop is operating at the school again this term. Talk to the team at Dancing Waters Cafe about getting lunch delivered on a Friday for $5 or $30 for the term.

Wanting to support our volunteer fire fighters during this fire season? Bake some yummy treats that are easy to grab in one hand and bring them down to Apple Tree Park over the next few days. Bring them in a box or disposable plate and deliver them to the grazing table (Down hill side of the Park) for the fire fighters to grab when they are on a break. It's a great way of showing your support!

Have you checked out our new sign on the Springbrook Community Hall yet? Isn't it great? It was painted over the last month or so, by new resident, Jan Rutherford who had a ball coming up with a theme for it. Inspired by the bush, the birds and our hall mural itself,  she wasnt stuck for inspiration. The old sign was deteriorating and was going to be hard to restore. It will he hung inside the hall and will continue to play a role in our social and cultural history.

Lots of fun at the Community Cuppa last Friday at the Lost Fawn Cafe. Lots of locals meeting lots 9f locals and chatting up a storm with special guest, Cr Glenn Tozer. Nice to see you up here Glenn, thanks for being the MC for our hall sign unveiling too!
